I supposed it had to happen;

What do these Pseudo Artifically intelligent Large Language Models think of me?

The podcast below comes from Google's NotebookLM
I find myself conflicted about AI's current trajectory. While I recognize there are multiple types of AI applications with varying benefits, my stance is nuanced.

The Promising Side
I actively use and appreciate AI tools that excel at specific tasks, particularly in digital photography. These specialized applications eliminate tedious, repetitive work and often perform better than humans at targeted functions. My background in AI research dates back to 1979 with decision tree algorithms, and I've explored various approaches including Bayesian networks for mineral exploration during my time at RMIT.
My Concerns with Large Language Models
I'm deeply skeptical of current large language models that indiscriminately consume internet content in pursuit of "general artificial intelligence." This approach feels more like an attention economy designed to benefit advertisers, politicians, and potentially bad actors in an already problematic landscape of misinformation and bias.
My primary objection centers on the unethical data collection practices—taking creative content without permission, then competing directly with the creators whose work fuels these systems. This undermines creators' ability to monetize their own work.
The Need for Regulation
I believe legislative restrictions are necessary to ensure safe and ethical AI development. It's encouraging to see the EU and Australia taking steps to impose legally enforceable limitations on major tech companies and internet oligarchs.

The technology has tremendous potential when applied thoughtfully to specific problems, but the current rush toward general AI raises serious ethical and societal concerns that need addressing now.
